Summer: A Season to Reflect, Refuel, and Rejuvenate

Now that we’ve said our goodbyes to the school year and say hello to the summer as it begins to unfold, we often think of sunshine, vacations, and a slower pace. Yet summer can also be something much deeper—a season of emotional renewal. Children, families, and educators have spent months navigating schedules, transitions, celebrations, disappointments, and growth. Every school year quietly asks much of our hearts. Summer invites us to pause long enough to notice what we are carrying and what we may need to set down. In emotionally responsive practices, we know growth does not only happen through doing more; growth also happens through rest, reflection, and connection. Just as children need time to integrate what they have learned, adults need time to rediscover joy, wonder, and purpose.

Summer offers an opportunity to ask ourselves gentle questions: What filled my cup this year? What emptied it? What brought me joy? What challenged me? Reflection is not about evaluating ourselves; it is about understanding ourselves. Children experience this same journey. They are saying goodbye to one season and hello to another. A preschool child says goodbye to being four and hello to being five. A first grader says goodbye to familiar routines and hello to new expectations. Families and educators experience these transitions too. Growth often lives in these spaces between endings and beginnings—the "messy middle" where learning, resilience, and new understanding quietly emerge. The goal is not perfection. The goal is becoming more present with ourselves and one another.

This summer, consider making "reflecting, refueling, and rejuvenating" a family and community practice rather than another task to complete. We do not need expensive vacations or perfectly planned activities to nurture ourselves and our children. Some of the most meaningful moments happen while sitting on a porch, taking a walk, blowing bubbles, reading a story, watching lightning bugs, or simply laughing together. Children remember how we made them feel more than what we purchased or planned. Summer may be whispering something important to all of us: slow down, notice one another, and reconnect with what matters most. Sometimes the greatest growth begins when we give ourselves permission to breathe.

Three Suggestions for Educators

1. Reflect on one child who stretched your heart this year: What gifts did they help you discover in yourself?

2. Refill your emotional cup through something that nourishes you—reading, gardening, music, walking, or quiet moments.

3. Reach out to one colleague simply to connect rather than accomplish a task.

1. Create one device-free family moment each day, even if only for fifteen minutes.

2. Ask one reflective question at dinner: What made you smile today?

3. Slow down and notice ordinary moments that become extraordinary memories.

Three Suggestions for Children (Ages 3–8)

1. Collect "wonder treasures" from nature—rocks, leaves, flowers, or interesting sticks.

2. Draw or talk about your favorite feeling from the day.

3. Laugh, run, play, imagine, and be wonderfully curious.
