A Child’s Message to Our Fathers

As we celebrate fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, mentors, uncles, and the many men who help shape the lives of children, I would like to offer a different kind of Father's Day message.

Not a message about being strong.

Not a message about providing.

Not a message about having all the answers.

Instead, a message from the heart of a child.

Dear Dad,

Show me how to be kind.

The world will teach me many things. It will teach me how to compete, how to win, and how to protect myself from being hurt. But I need you to teach me something deeper.

Show me how to be kind.

Let me see you speak gently to people when you could speak harshly. Let me hear you say "thank you," "I'm sorry," and "I love you."

When I watch you, I am learning what it means to be human.

Show me your vulnerability.

Teach me that courage is not pretending we are never afraid. Let me see that tears are not weakness and that asking for help is not failure.

When you share your struggles and hopes, you give me permission to be fully myself.

Show me how to care.

Show me how to notice when someone is hurting. Show me how to listen more than I speak. Show me how to sit beside someone who is sad instead of trying to fix everything.

One day I will build relationships of my own. The way you love others today becomes the blueprint I carry into my future.

Show me your values.

Teach me that character matters more than popularity, integrity matters more than convenience, and kindness is greater than cruelty.

Show me how to live your values, not simply talk about them.

When I see you keeping your promises, treating others with respect, and standing up for what is right, I learn what leadership truly looks like.

Most importantly, Dad show me how to love…

·       Love your family.

·       Love your community.

·       Love yourself enough to continue growing.

·       Love others enough to see their humanity.

Because when you do, I learn that strength and tenderness can live in the same heart.

In emotionally responsive relationships, I will learn through connection before correction. I learn through observation before instruction. Long before I can remember the words, I remember how it made me feel.

The truth is that fathers help shape the emotional climate in which children grow. Children who experience kindness often learn kindness. Children who experience empathy often learn empathy. Children who experience emotional safety often learn to create emotional safety for others.

·       No father is perfect. Fortunately, children do not need perfection. They need PRESENCE

·       They need fathers who continue to show up.

·       They need fathers who apologize when they make mistakes.

·       They need fathers who are willing to keep learning.

Some of the most important lessons are taught not through lectures, but through everyday moments of connection.

Today, perhaps the greatest gift a father can give is not another piece of advice.

Perhaps it is simply this:

"Watch me. Walk beside me. Let us grow together."

·       Because the child who sees kindness learns kindness.

·       The child who experiences empathy learns empathy.

·       The child who witnesses love learns how to love.

·       And what happens early in life lasts a lifetime.
