Long before an infant can smile intentionally, speak a word, or take a first step, they are already searching. They gaze into the faces of those who hold them. They study every expression, every movement, every moment of connection. Those tiny eyes are asking profound questions: Are you here? Do you see me? Am I safe? Do I matter? Developmental science continues to remind us that these early moments of eye contact are far more than sweet interactions. Gazing is one of the earliest forms of emotional communication.
