A Patriot for Our Children Listening to the Voices of Our Youngest Citizens as America Turns 250 As our nation approaches its 250th birthday, we pause to celebrate the courage, hope, and dreams that helped shape the United States of America. Anniversaries invite us not only to look back, but also to ask an important question: What kind of future are we creating for the next generation? In a season when division often seems louder than understanding, one question rises above the noise: Who is listening to the children? While adults debate policies, politics, and the direction of our country, our youngest citizens are quietly watching and absorbing the emotional world around them. They sit in our homes, classrooms, playgrounds, and communities learning not only from what we say, but from how we live. Sometimes their responses appear as what we call “challenging behaviors.” Yet behavior is often communication. It can be a child’s way of saying: See me. Hear me. Hold me. Help me understand this world. As a patriot for children, I have dedicated my life to building environments where every child feels safe, valued, and free to grow into their fullest potential. To me, patriotism has never been about choosing a political side. Patriotism means choosing our children. It means protecting innocence, nurturing development, advocating for dignity, and creating opportunities for every child—regardless of race, ability, family structure, or zip code. I see the future not only in flags and celebrations, but in every child's heart, voice, and dream. That is America worth investing in. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. reminded us: "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." As communities experience fear, uncertainty, and division, children often feel the impact before they understand it. They absorb the emotional temperature around them—the tension, the worry, the anger, and even our silence. Children are students of our emotional lives. They are learning how to respond to differences by watching us. They are learning what safety feels like by observing us. They are learning whether the world is kind or dangerous through the words we choose and the ways we treat one another. Perhaps one of the greatest acts of patriotism today is not waving a flag, but modeling love, empathy, compassion, and respect. How do we advocate for children during times of uncertainty? We begin by listening deeply—not only to their words but also to their silence, their play, and their behaviors. We create environments where children experience belonging and emotional safety. We reduce the noise around them and strengthen relationships through shared meals, stories, play, laughter, and time together. When we teach empathy and compassion, we are doing far more than raising kind children. We are cultivating future citizens capable of sustaining a healthy society. Every child carries an unspoken question: "Am I safe?" Our response should always be: "Yes, you are safe. I am here. We will face this together." As America celebrates 250 years, perhaps our greatest legacy will not be measured by our buildings, our technology, or our political victories. It may be measured by how we cared for our youngest citizens. When people ask where I stand, my answer remains simple: I stand on the side of children. Their voices are our compass. Their dreams are our future.
